I dabble into many genres, mastering none. My favorite is the short story, but sometimes a poem invades my thoughts, and I am forever working on my autobiography.

Lesson by the Sea

(for Katie)

Perched on a rock

Worn and smoothed by years of time,

Perusing the ocean's expanse

Watching a gull dive,

A glint of light mistaken for a fish

Returning to the cliff, empty-handed

The wind clutches at a dolphin

At the apex of its leap,

Unable to catch the glistening prize

Waves pound the sand,

Rolling off in large circles,

And still the sand attempts to hold on

The reds and purples of the hour

Seem to melt into the ocean's horizon

The sky's fingers reluctantly releasing its paints

I let you go,

Knowing I cannot hold onto

That which I never had
